Comprehensive ecological support for development projects throughout the planning process
Our service range covers the full spectrum of ecological work typically required for development projects in the UK. Prices shown are indicative for standard sites; we provide detailed quotations based on site-specific factors including location, size and complexity.
Survey timing is critical in ecology. Many assessments can only be conducted during specific seasonal windows. We recommend early engagement to ensure ecological work does not delay your project programme.
Combined desk study and site walkover providing an initial assessment of ecological constraints and opportunities. Identifies potential for protected species and habitats, recommending further survey work where required. Essential first step for most planning applications.
Licensed surveys for bats, great crested newts, badgers, reptiles, breeding birds and other protected wildlife. Conducted using established methodologies by appropriately licensed ecologists. Survey scope and timing determined by preliminary appraisal findings.
Comprehensive plans for restoring degraded habitats or creating new wildlife areas. Includes native planting schedules, establishment methods and long-term management prescriptions. Suitable for mitigation requirements or voluntary conservation initiatives.
Calculation of biodiversity units using the statutory metric, identifying the net gain or loss from proposed development. Includes baseline habitat survey, impact assessment and recommendations for achieving mandatory biodiversity net gain requirements.
Post-construction monitoring to demonstrate compliance with planning conditions and protected species licence requirements. Includes regular site visits, data collection and annual reporting. Programme duration tailored to condition requirements.
Full ecological chapter for Environmental Statement, meeting EIA Regulations requirements. Comprehensive baseline characterisation, impact assessment, mitigation design and residual effects evaluation. For major developments requiring formal EIA screening.
Ecological surveys are constrained by seasonal factors. Many species can only be detected reliably during specific periods, and planning your project timeline around these windows is essential.
Activity surveys: May to September. Hibernation assessments: November to February.
Presence/absence: Mid-March to mid-June. Population assessments require multiple visits.
Standard methodology: April to June. Dawn chorus surveys for woodland sites.
Active season: April to September. Seven visits required for presence/absence.
Beyond our core ecological survey and assessment services, we provide specialist support for complex projects:
Where development will affect protected species, a licence from Natural England may be required before works can proceed. We prepare licence applications, design mitigation strategies and provide named ecologist support throughout the licensing process. Licence application fees are additional to our professional fees.
We provide technical support during the planning process, including responses to local authority ecologist comments, attendance at planning committee meetings and expert witness services for appeals. We work constructively with planning authorities to find solutions that enable development while protecting ecological interests.
For sensitive sites, an Ecological Clerk of Works provides on-site supervision during construction. This ensures compliance with mitigation measures, protected species licence conditions and planning requirements. Available on a retained or call-off basis.

Prices shown are indicative for standard projects and may vary based on site-specific factors including location, accessibility, size and ecological complexity. All quotations are provided in writing following initial project discussion.
Survey costs may increase where multiple visits are required due to weather conditions or species activity patterns. Third-party costs such as licence application fees, access permissions and specialist equipment hire are additional where applicable.
